Test Information

The primary purpose of the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) is to gauge a student's skill level in core subject areas and determine if he or she meets all the criteria for success in competitive secondary schools.

Who Takes It?

Not all competitive secondary schools require the SSAT. Consult your guidance counselor to determine if you have to take it. Two different versions of the SSAT are administered. The Lower Level test is taken by students in the fifth, sixth, and seventh grades. The Upper Level test is taken by students in the eighth, ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades.

What's On It?

Each version of the SSAT is a 155-minute standardized test consisting of a series of multiple-choice questions divided into four scored sections and one unscored section:

  • Quantitative (two sections)
  • Verbal
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Essay
