Meet Our Tutors

Kaplan Premier's tutors are the foundation of our service. Having graduated our rigorous training and development program, they all share the same level of excellence: near-perfect scores (in the 95th percentile or above), previous instructional experience, and—most importantly—the ability to create an interactive one-on-one learning environment based on the individual needs of each student.

Here are just a few of the tutors who work with Kaplan Premier students in the Seattle area. At the onset of any tutoring program, your Academic Coordinator will conduct our Tutor Matching Interview to find the best possible tutor for your child.

Sophia

Subjects Tutored: SAT
Teaching/Tutoring Experience: I trained to be an SAT instructor in May 2007 and taught two classes during the summer of 2007. In September 2007, I cross over to Kaplan Premier and started SAT tutoring. Since then, I have tutored four students, mostly concentrating on the Verbal portion of the test.
Hobbies/Passions: I love to jog, play the piano, play a mean game of Scrabble, volunteer as an officer of numerous clubs on campus, and make society a better place through my volunteering, internship, and education.
Degrees Earned: I earned my high school diploma from Acton-Boxborough High School in Acton, MA.
Degrees In Progress: I am a junior, currently earning a B.A. in Sociology at the University of Washington.
Fun Fact: I never leave my house without a pair of earrings and my watch, but I cannot say the same for my keys.
Favorite KP Experience: I get immense satisfaction from seeing my students succeed and gain more confidence as we go through the course. The best part is when I receive sincere thank yous from both the parents and my tutee for not only helping my student reach their goal, but also for making the Kaplan tutoring experience fun.

Jerusha

Subjects Tutored: PSAT/SAT Math & Verbal; ACT; SAT II Math II & Literature
Teaching/Tutoring Experience: Ten years of tutoring experience. Instructor and teaching assistant at the University of Washington in Anthropology, Mathematics and Teacher Training. Winner of the 2007 UW Excellence in Teaching Award

Degrees In Progress: Ph.D. Biocultural Anthropology, University of Washington; M.P.H. Epidemiology University of Washington
Fun Fact: Before returning to grad school, I worked on US biodefense policy; now I play intramural flag football and softball!
Hobbies/Passions: Teaching of course! I also enjoy international adventure travel, pop music from the 80s, and CSI
Favorite KP Experience: I enjoy how working with individual students and their own learning styles has given me insights into teaching classes of all sizes and subjects. I often feel that I learn as much from my students as they learn from me.

Laura

Subjects Tutored: SAT Verbal, ACT Verbal, SAT 2 Subject Tests in Literature, World History, and U.S. History
Teaching/Tutoring Experience: Over five years of one-on-one tutoring experience in literature, mechanics, writing, and ESL before joining the Kaplan Premier team
Degrees Earned: B.A. in English Literature
Fun Fact: When I was in Colorado, I almost got bitten by tarantulas when I used their nesting holes as hand grips to climb up a rock face. If you see small, roundish indentations on a rock in the west, walk away.
Hobbies/Passions: Travel, writing, mystery novels, good movies
Favorite KP Experience: Thus far, most of my tutoring sessions have had their own special moment of clarity when a concept or strategy just "clicks". I love helping someone achieve that clarity, even if it's something small like a new vocabulary word.

Terra

Teaching/Tutoring Experience: Just over 1 year at Kaplan and previously ESL tutoring
Degrees In Progress: I am finishing my final year of Nursing School for my B.S.N.
Hobbies/Passions: Travel, Broadway musicals, painting with oils and acrylics, music, skiing, golf, fastpitch softball
Favorite KP Experience: Probably fitting twelve hours of lessons with one student into four days

Emily

Subjects Tutored: SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT, SAT2 Biology, Chemistry, Literature
Teaching/Tutoring Experience: I've worked for Kaplan Premier for 5 years. I've also TAed various anthropology courses and taught college writing.
Degrees Earned: M.A. (anthropology), M.P.H. (epidemiology), and I'm currently finishing a Ph.D. in anthropology (this all means that I've been in school for a very long time)
Fun Fact: I spent my high school years living in Egypt with my family.
Hobbies/Passions: softball, softball, softball
Favorite KP Experience: Score increases are always fun, but even more than these I like watching the "light bulb" moments where things finally click for my students and they say things like "Oh that's what they mean," or "Now I get it."

Cori

Subjects Tutored: P/SAT, ACT, ISEE, SAT Biology (E/M) SAT French, Academic
Teaching/Tutoring Experience: I've been tutoring since high school in a variety of areas. Much of my work has been volunteer work in lower income schools in Alabama (where I received my undergrad degree) but I've also helped my peers by leading study groups in my undergraduate program.
Hobbies/Passions: I love singing, listening to This American Life, and, of course, going to grad school. My passion is environmental policy, and so I also love keeping up with politics and the upcoming election!
Degrees Earned: BS in Biology, minors in French and Environmental Studies
Degrees In Progress: MPA (Public Affairs) from the Evans School at UW and an MS in Environmental Policy from the College of Forest Resources.
Fun Fact: I love watching football! Five of my old schoolmates play for NFL teams (including the Seahawks!) and I'm fiercely proud of Ole Miss because I'm from Mississippi...but I'm learning to love the Huskies, too!
Favorite KP Experience: I have a student right now who is very into politics, and I love listening to his points of view before we have our lessons!
